The wait is almost over! The first multipart plastic kits for the Sisters of Battle – specifically, the Battle Sisters and Retributors – are up for pre-order this very weekend! Between them, these two sets can make up to four different units, so we spoke with miniatures guru Ben Jefferson and the Battle Sisters kit’s designer Joe Tomaszewski to get the low-down. en Jefferson: The Sisters of Battle range has been around since the late 1990s. It had its own codex and unit entries, so there was a strong legacy that we needed to cater for before we could branch the range out elsewhere. The Battle Sisters and Retributors kits were among the first steps towards that end, as they enable you to assemble units of Battle Sisters, Celestians, Dominions and Retributors with all of their respective weapon options. Joe Tomaszewski: That’s right, I worked with Israel Gonzalez (who designed the Retributors kit) to make sure that both sets complemented each other. This went all the way from making the torsos, heads and weapon arms as interchangeable as possible to ensuring that all of the weapon options available to each unit were covered. For example, the multi-melta from the Retributors kit can fit on some of the standard Battle Sister torsos, so you can give the squad some anti-tank capability. The same applies to the various Superiors for each unit, we wanted to include the huge variety of wargear available to them. Ben: The Sisters of Battle actively use faith as a weapon, and some of the options available to the Superiors really exemplify that. Instead of a chainsword or power sword, they can be assembled to be reading aloud from a holy tome or wielding a chaplet ecclesiasticus. Each squad also has the option to carry a revered standard called a Simulacrum Imperialis, and Joe made two different options to choose from. Joe: The Simulacrum Imperialis feature memento mori or the skulls of martyrs, and a relic box that can either be locked shut or assembled without a lid to reveal the sacred bone within. In the case of the locked chest, I thought it would be a nice touch to design a cherub whose sole purpose was to carry the box’s key, constantly polishing it in holy oils and unguents. If you don’t want to include a Simulacrum Imperialis in your squad you can replace it with a helmet tucked underneath the Battle Sister’s arm. Ben: On that note, we wanted to include a wealth of different head options for the Sisters. Traditionally, they’ve always been shown helmetless and with cropped, shoulder-length hair. Joe made a huge number of different options for the Battle Sisters kit, giving hobbyists the ability to assemble the entire squad with helmets, as well as a range of hair options. There are four different Superior heads, featuring a bionic eye, hood, headband or a banded helmet. Joe: Despite their Ecclesiastical heritage, the Sisters of Battle are elite warriors first and foremost, so I designed the squad to appear as if advancing towards the enemy as a combative firing line, guns blazing or at the ready. There are a number of other nuances that hint towards their battle-hardened status too. One of the right arm options works in conjunction with a head to appear as if the Sister is pulling a grenade pin out with her teeth so she can continue firing! Alternatively, she can be assembled with her throwing arm extended, ready to lob the grenade, which works better with a helmeted head. Thanks for the insights, guys! Honestly, we could’ve let them talk all day. We didn’t even have time to mention the cool empty scabbards for the Superior’s chainsword and power sword options, as well as the sheathed sword to keep the Sister’s melee hand free. These are some seriously well-designed and intricate kits! What’s more, you’ll be able to pre-order them this weekend. Until then, if you haven’t already picked up Sister Superior Amalia Novena to lead one of your Battle Sisters squads, now’s the time!"
