As you may or may or not be aware, Luther pattern Excavation Automata – also known as ‘Ambots’ – are heavy mining constructs built in imitation of the galaxy’s foremost burrowing creature, the Ambull. In fact, Ambots actually incorporate organic Ambull matter into their construction. Considering that the Ambull is available in stores now, and the Ambots are up for pre-order this weekend, we thought it would be fun to find out which would win in a fight – Ambull or Ambot? Yet in order to answer this quandary, we first needed some Necromunda rules for an Ambull. Thankfully, evil genius Andy Hoare was on hand to provide us with exactly what we needed! This process was quite straightforward, as most of the Ambull’s Warhammer 40,000 characteristics could be transferred over directly. Any gaps in its Necromunda profile were then filled with those of the random gribbly from the Monster Hunt scenario (more on that later). Behold the dreaded Ambull in all its terrifying glory: Yes, we know – it’s absolutely horrible, and so it should be! Thankfully, Ambots are armed with a variety of deadly melee and close-ranged weapons with which to take it on, including tunnelling claws that feature built-in meltaguns. But Andy didn’t want to leave out the little guys, so he also wrote some rules for the Borewyrm Infestations too. All we needed now were two willing volunteers. Rising to the challenge were a pair of Necromunda writers – Owen Barnes, who chose the Ambull, and Tom Clarke, who would command the Ambots. In order to give them a proper test, we tried a mix of combinations, starting with… Fight 1 – Bug vs Bot Organic Ambull squared off against cybernetic hybrid in the combat arena found in the interior of the Necromunda: Underhive box… Tom won the priority and move his Ambot forwards, but was just out of range to engage the Ambull with his meltaguns. Owen attempted to charge in response but failed the charge roll. Tom retained the priority, firing his meltaguns at close range, and though one of the deadly weapons hit home, it failed to penetrate the Ambull’s chitinous hide. The missed opportunity cost Tom dear, as with a roar, the Ambull charged and promptly dismembered the Ambot in a shockingly violent display. Fight 2 – Double Trouble The Ambull had swiftly overpowered one Ambot, but how would it fare against two? Owen claimed the priority in the opening turn, opting to boldly hurl the Ambull in between the two Ambots. Tom responded by charging with his first Ambot, but luck abandoned him and he failed to hit with any of attacks! The Ambull mauled the unfortunate Ambot in response, inflicting a pair of wounds. The second Ambot charged to the aid of its stricken comrade, but its furious blows glanced harmlessly off the Ambull’s natural armour. Enraged, the Ambull turned to tear the Ambot in half! Winning the priority for the second time, Tom resorted to a different tactic, opting to fire his Ambot’s meltaguns at point-blank range. Yet all the luck remained firmly with Owen – the Ambot’s attacks all failed, leaving it wide open to a murderous savaging from the Ambull. Fight 3 – Rumble in the Underhive Jungle So far, the Ambull hadn’t needed any help… but it was about to get some anyway! Tom moved first, but failed to hit the nearest group of Borewyrms with his Ambot’s meltaguns. The diminutive critters scuttled forwards and began gnawing at the Ambot’s legs, though they suffered a flesh wound when the enormous machine stamped on them. The second Ambot failed its charge and was attacked in turn by the other Borewyrm Infestation. The cybernetic construction withstood the biting of the Borewryms before incinerating them with its meltaguns. Yet before Tom could celebrate this minor victory, the Ambull entered the fray to avenge its fallen offspring by tearing the offending Ambot apart. The destruction wrought upon its fellow caused the other Ambot to flee, then later fail to rally. Trapped in a corner of the arena, the Ambot couldn’t escape the wrathful Ambull, which chased it down and (eight injury dice later!) tore it limb from limb. “Clearly the Imperium decided that Ambulls were far too dangerous, so designed their Ambots to be much more manageable!” – Owen Well, the Ambull emerged the undisputed champion of our arena deathmatch, though it’s fair to say that Tom had his fair share of bad luck, while Owen’s dice rolls were near perfect throughout! Still, the Ambull would be at least twice the points of an Ambot by Andy’s reckoning, so Tom was always going to be up against it. Andy also suggested that you could replace the rules for the nameless beast in the Monster Hunt mission (which you can download below) with an Ambull. A word of warning, though – he advised that only the most experienced gangs should risk doing so. As you’ve just seen, the Ambull doesn’t mess about! Alternatively, your arbitrator could lend you a helping hand… you’ll likely need it! If you’ve been inspired to give our arena deathmatch a go, or play the Monster Hunt mission on hard mode, you can grab your copy of Blackstone Fortress: The Dreaded Ambull in store and online now. You’ll be able to bolster your gangs with Ambots by pre-ordering them this weekend."
